What is Periodontal Disease?

Our mouths are home to both helpful and harmful bacteria. Typically, when a diligent oral hygiene routine is not set in place, the harmful bacteria have the chance to flourish and spread throughout the smile. This bacterium often leaves behind a film called plaque that attaches to the surfaces of teeth and along the gum line. If this sticky film is left to progress further, it eventually hardens and becomes calculus which cannot be properly removed with daily brushing and flossing alone. The toxins and irritants found in plaque can embed themselves between gums and teeth, causing the development of periodontal “pockets” as gums start to slowly separate from teeth.

From there, this oral infection spreads beneath the gums which affect the health of the jawbone, resulting in inevitable tooth loss from gum recession as well as the toxins spreading to other areas of the body through your bloodstream.
Dr. Aron utilizes his passion and dedication to achieving optimal oral health for all patients by helping effectively treat gum disease. Preserving the long-lasting health, integrity, and beauty of your smile is his top priority.

Common symptoms of gum disease include:

Gum-tissue Recession
Bleeding Gums when Flossing and Brushing
Gum Inflammation and Sensitivity
Yellow Teeth

Periodontal Treatment from Dr. Brandon Aron

At the dental practice of Brandon Aron, DMD, our Salisbury team provides periodontal maintenance solutions such as dental scaling and root planing. This procedure is essential for properly addressing calculus accumulation that can compromise the health of your teeth and gums. These deep cleanings were designed to halt the progression of gum disease and offer patients the chance to achieve optimal oral health once more. In addition, this maintenance also helps preserve proper jawbone strength and keeps remaining teeth healthy.

Patients are given a local anesthetic to improve their comfort while undergoing treatment at our office. This allows our Salisbury team to remove the accumulation of calculus effectively and efficiently.
Dental scaling involves removing plaque, tartar, and other bacterial irritants from the surfaces of teeth and below the gum line. To encourage proper healing and reduce pocket depth, root planing smooths the tooth roots to prevent future bacteria and plaque build-up.

To aid in proper recovery and control further infection, Dr. Aron may refer patients out to a trusted periodontist if severe gum disease is at an advanced stage.
